Description
Palais Coburg was built between 1840 and 1845 in a classicist style, commissioned by Ferdinand von Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha. The grand palace was constructed atop a former bastion, the Braunbastei, whose foun-dations include sections of the city’s fortifications dating from the sixteenth century.
In 1997, a private foundation, the POK Pühringer Privatstiftung, acquired the building. From 2000 to 2003, after several years of planning, they renovated, revitalized, and rebuilt the structure taking into account all available historical information. The total investments amounted to 85 million euros.
On 7 November 2003, the “new” Palais Coburg opened to the public. Six centuries of Viennese architectural history can thus be experi-enced in one building. The building’s unique historical fabric is also the base of the Palais’ current use, with its total area of more than 16,000 square meters providing sufficient space for both the hotel and the Coburg Gourmet : Wine Bistro, Wine Vault, the Haram, and a Wine Lounge along with the Wine Archive and its six wine cellars.
35 LUXURY CLASS SUITES FOR A UNIQUE STAY
“Preserve the past, shape the future” is the motto of the POK Pühringer Privatstiftung, which has transformed the Palais Coburg into not just any “common accommodations” but a true treasure of a hotel unique on the international scene. Just a few months after opening, the Coburg Hotel Residence was classified with five stars and Vienna again had a new hotel in this top category for the first time in a decade. The Palais Coburg is also the only hotel in Vienna to be accepted as member of the renowned Relais & Châteaux hotel association.
The thirty-five-suites in the heart of Vienna offer a form of luxury unique in Austria until today, with the full range of services and comforts standard in all outstanding hotels.
The thirty-five highly individual retreats at the Palais Coburg Hotel accommodate the most discriminating tastes: from the elegant Imperial and Palais Suites to the City Suite through to the extravagant Loft and Penthouse Suites. Room sizes vary from 54 to 165 square meters, whereby all accommodations share maximum comfort, utmost privacy, and a vibrant relationship to the house’s history.
In keeping with an authentic atmosphere, all of the suites are named for members of the Sachsen-Coburg and Gotha families. Above and be-yond the exceptional ambiance, Palais Coburg offers all amenities that a guest could possibly expect from a top-class luxury establishment.
Coburg guests have a choice: breakfast in their own suite, or perhaps it would be nice to dine in the light-flooded glass pavilion of the Wine Bistro/Bastion Garden Restaurant, or in the warmer months, in the beautiful Bastion Garden. Breakfast is, of course, served à la carte for each guest from Palais Coburg’s gourmet kitchen, and can satisfy all possible desires of the morning hours from foie gras to champagne.
The oasis of well being on the top floor is reserved the exclusive use by hotel guests. The spa area is furnished with a generous size pool and terrace, a Finnish sauna, and a steam room. In addition, there is a workout area with cardio training equipment.
Guests who prefer to make use of the hotel limousine service will be chauffeured through Vienna in Palais Coburg’s black Pullman Mercedes.
THE WINE ARCHIVE – THE CELLAR ENSEMBLE
The thick walls of the venerable Palais Coburg provide ideal conditions for the storage and slow, careful aging of great wines. This, combined with Peter Pühringer’s love of such wines are what have allowed to collect such an impressive treasure trove of them.
The cellars of the Palais hold over 60,000 bottles of wine from all over the world dating back to 1727. The wine list is unique in Austria and its match would be hard to find anywhere in the world. It has been regularly awarded by the most famous specialised magazine, such as the Wine Spectator and Decanter in the US, the Weinwisser in Switzerland, or the Weingourmet in Germany.
Six wine cellars were established in the various areas of the building’s historical foundation, each with its own characteristics, spe-cial dedication, and ideal climate for the storage and aging of great rare wines. Along with the Champagne Cellar (formerly the Ice Cellar), the French Cellar, and the Rarities Cellar, three additional cellars were fully rebuilt between the latter half of 2006 and March of 2007: Old World Cellar, New World Cellar and Yquem Cellar.
In addition to these six cellars, the Palais Coburg Wine Archive offers special areas for cultivated wine pleasure in extraordinary surroundings. The possibilities range from the stylish staging of an aperitif to theme-specific wine tastings to gourmet meals in an exclusive, separate space, like, for exemple, in The Dom Pérignon Lounge, designed by Philippe Starck.
The fascinating wine treasures of Palais Coburg are naturally not only offered in the evening restaurant and the extraordinary cellar vaults, but are also available to those who come for lunch, to enjoy a fine glass of wine as celebration of a successful day at work, or who are looking for a special conclusion to an evening of culinary pleasure. Many excellent wines are also served by the glass.
The Garden Pavilion with its Bastion Garden is the Palais Coburg’s green oasis. The pavilion is a reconstruction based on the historical model of the original palm house and today comprises an atmospheric lounge area for connoisseurs.
In the Bastion Garden, magnoli-as and sycamores lend aroma and shade; rose bushes, lavender, and boxwoods adorn the former bastion and create the atmosphere of a glorious palace garden: The ideal location for a pleasurable breakfast, a business lunch in a beautiful setting, or a relaxed evening meal above the rooftops of Vienna.
