Zermatt - the village without cars. The picturesque mountain village at the foot of the Matterhorn has become one of the most important summer and winter holiday destinations of Switzerland. Zermatt is car-free - no motor vehicles are permitted. Horse-drawn sleighs and carriages, electric vehicles and bicycles are the only modes of transport allowed. This makes Zermatt an ideal place for relaxing and peaceful holidays.
Zermatt is situated at an altitude of 1,600 metres above sea level. It is located at the foot of the Matterhorn in the Valais Alps, in the south of Switzerland. Travel from Visp through the Visper Valley, at the end of which Zermatt is located. In the mountains around Zermatt you will find 38 of the 76 European "four thousanders". The skiing area stretches from Theodol-Col (3,300 metres) and Testa Grigia (3,480 metres) to Cervinia in Italy.
By car:
Zermatt is car-free. Cars are only permitted to travel as far as Täsch (5 km before Zermatt). The road from Täsch to Zermatt is closed for public traffic.
In Täsch you will find plenty of parking. There are 2,900 parking spaces - 2000 of these in the Matterhorn Terminal in Täsch and an additional 900 public car spaces. Some car parks have outdoor parking and offer a taxi service to and from Zermatt.
From Täsch, shuttle trains (Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn) leave every 20 minutes to Zermatt.
By train:
International trains stop at Visp and Brig. The Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn provides a direct rail link to Zermatt from Brig and Visp. Your trip to Zermatt will take you through through the romantic and wild Visper valley.
Since December 2007 travelling times to the Valais have been drastically reduced thanks to the new "Lötschberg Base Tunnel".
By plane:
Zermatt is only a few hours away from the international airports of Zurich, Geneva, Basle and Milan. Zermatt also has its own heliport, which is managed by Air Zermatt.
